What is "success"?

October 29, 2007

Sometime back I was watching “The First Blast” on Dawn News. The topic was “The Youth of Pakistan”. The program was largely influenced by hosts giving out what they believed was “right” and “socially acceptable”.

My reservations aside, but there was a particular point that stuck me. The host asked an interesting question,”What is the youth of Pakistan running after?” The question was posed to find why is the youth so obsessive about getting to the top of the organization they wok at.

A thought-provoking question, indeed. I see myself along with my peers in an endless rat race to maximize my disposable income. We invest a lot of our time in education not to develop our minds but rather to fatten our pockets. But why? what will happen if we even reach the top level of the organization? What will we do with all the money? What did Bill Gates do with his money (1/3rd in charity)?

Beats me.

This frustration with money and power is sadly handed down by our society. Its intensity has grown with time, maybe its due to prevailing injustice or the vicious cycle of poverty our people live in. It maybe due to the fear of the unknown or desire for an extravagant lifestyle.

We are not satisfied. And perhaps this is the side-effect of the “principles” the west has handed us down. Maybe its meant to be that way.

Something from the web:

Hong Kongers are working fewer hours than last year but say their work-life balance has not improved and 27 percent of those surveyed said they would consider moving out of the territory in search of a better lifestyle.

More than 60 percent of employees surveyed also said they suffer from prolonged fatigue and 33 percent said their productivity was affected as a result.

Employees said more annual leave would help improve work-life balance but the survey found that entitlement to paid annual leave has fallen to 13.9 days this year from 15.3 days last year. More than 35 percent of employees said they do not always take their full entitlement anyway.

What for? Why?
